Road Management: Visual Inspection

Road Management: Visual Inspection

Frequent use and frost are factors that contribute to road wear. Potholes in the surface layers, stone loss, subsidence, and cracks in the asphalt are common damage symptoms. Through proper inspection and regular maintenance, the damage can often be repaired without drastic measures. In this course, you will learn to recognize and assess damage symptoms according to the CROW system (publications 146a and b). This course forms the basis for the theory exam, which then provides access to the practical exam, allowing you to obtain the accredited Visual Road Inspector (VIW) diploma.

What will you learn during the training?

The course consists of theory and practice. You will learn about:

  • theory of damage patterns
  • perform detailed visual inspection in groups
  • theory of global visual inspection (including the need for minor maintenance)
  • carrying out a global visual inspection of a number of road sections as a team
  • discussing and evaluating the results
  • creating and discussing sample questions that can be asked on the theory exam.

Setup

The course consists of three days spread over three weeks. The course covers damage patterns for asphalt, composite, and cement concrete pavements. It covers both identifying damage and assessing its severity and extent. During the course, you'll put theory into practice by conducting two half-day inspections independently. The instructor will provide guidance and explanations on these sections of road in the surrounding area. The results of both the overall and detailed inspections will be discussed and evaluated in class.

Learning goals

After completing the course you will be able to:

  • recognize the different types of damage
  • distinguish the severity and extent classes per damage picture
  • independently perform a global and detailed visual inspection
  • register for the VIW theory exam that gives access to the practical exam.

What do you get afterwards?

Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of participation.
