KROL aspiring machinists start with custom work from SOMA

We recently provided a unique, customized program for a rail infrastructure client. The goal: to train rail workers to operate earthmoving machinery on and around the track, allowing them to gain practical experience before enrolling in a TCVT program.

In practice, it proves difficult to accumulate experience hours during regular work. A full training program for earthmoving operators – which normally takes 1,5 to 2 years – wasn't suitable in this situation. Therefore, we developed a compact, practical five-day program, fully tailored to working with hydraulic excavators on and off the track, to prepare for the TCVT training courses.

From simulator to lifting operations

The course began with a half-day of theory on earthmoving machinery, followed by a simulator session where participants could practice various earthmoving activities. This was followed by a practical day on the hydraulic excavator, focusing on basic skills.

The remaining days focused on earthmoving work with the KROL crane from the track. The final day also focused on the excavator as a lifting tool, supported by theory on lifting equipment and basic knowledge of lifting.

Gain experience before training

"We used to be able to recruit people with experience in earthmoving or from agricultural college. But they simply aren't available anymore," says Arie Overeem, business line manager for cranes and welding at Strukton Rail. "That's why we decided to hire people without experience and let them take their first steps here. The five-day training course we developed together with SOMA offers a good starting point."

The pilot participants were enthusiastic about the pace and practicality of the program. And the instructors were pleased with the collaboration: "We were impressed with the teaching approach and the clear structure that SOMA provided," says Overeem.

Practical, targeted and effective

This customized training program is a great example of how SOMA Bedrijfsopleidingen flexibly responds to specific training needs within the infrastructure and rail sectors. It's not a standard program, but a program that perfectly aligns with today's practices and tomorrow's safety requirements.
