Theme: Digging is a team effort!

The annual Machinist Training Days (MSD) will take place on January 21 and 22, 2016 at the Construction and Infrastructure Park in Harderwijk.

Although it might not seem so, a machine operator doesn't dig alone. Before the first bucket hits the ground, several people in the company are already busy making preparations. Work planners, ground workers, and so on. They then complete the job together with the machine operator, and additional hands are often needed to dig properly with the machine. Digging test trenches is usually done by ground workers. We, the organizers of the annual MSD (Meetings for the Construction Industry), namely the trade association Het Zwarte Corps, SOMA company training, and the Groundwork Association of Bouwend Nederland (Dutch Construction Industry), are fully aware of this. Therefore, we have decided to expand the target group for these days. We also invite work planners, foremen, civil engineering professionals, fitters, and last but not least, ground workers to participate in MSD 2016 alongside the machine operators. The program for these days has been slightly adjusted accordingly. We will achieve this by organizing six workshops in which the following topics will be discussed interactively. What is covered?

The program:

The use and necessity of a good working posture.
A good working posture leads to fewer physical complaints. But how do you achieve this? How should chairs be adjusted? What about knee strain? After a more or less theoretical section, participants will work under expert guidance to experience what works and what doesn't.

Machine maintenance
Proper machine maintenance leads to less downtime, lower costs, and greater job satisfaction. This also applies to using the right machine in the right place. What should you pay attention to? When should you call in outside help to ensure timely maintenance? Or can we do it ourselves? Wynmalen & Hausman will give a presentation and demonstrate these aspects clearly.

Use Keramo stoneware pipes
A layperson might think that pipes are pipes and can all be laid in the ground in the same way. But is that true? No, of course not! A PVC pipe requires different treatment than a stoneware pipe. What are the specific properties of stoneware pipes? When is it prescribed? Under what conditions should it be laid? Is this type of pipe more vulnerable than others? Keramo, one of the suppliers of these stoneware pipes, will answer these questions and those from the audience.

Invest in yourself!
Enroll in training whenever and wherever possible to stay up-to-date in your own field, but also in potentially related fields. Strengthen your own position in the labor market. These are just a few statements that everyone would agree with. But... what role can I play in this, and who will pay for it? What are the consequences if I don't? The new collective labor agreement for the construction industry includes agreements on an individual training budget. How will this budget be funded? What training courses are we talking about? How can you make the most of this? Monique van Meerendonk will fill you in.

Collaboration
Collaboration requires good communication. This is a topic that comes up every time at the MSD. It's never the same approach, but it always provides food for thought. This year, Niek Verkade has once again agreed to explore this topic with the participants in a fun and engaging way.

Developments in the material field
Every machine manufacturer is constantly working to improve the equipment they supply. This is not only in the area of fuel efficiency but also in other areas. Reducing the strain on physical fitness is often a motivator. But how do you bring this to the attention of users? One of the objectives of the MSD is to inform this target group. Although already on the market for several years, the joystick replacing the steering wheel in excavators is still relatively unknown. Nevertheless, it reduces strain on arms and shoulders. Caterpillar can offer a joystick instead of the steering wheel on the excavator as an option. What are the advantages, how does it work, and is this the future for other manufacturers as well? An excavator without a steering wheel will be demonstrated outdoors. Attendees will be able to experience what this means firsthand (subject to change).

Piet van der Zouwen competition

The Piet van der Zouwen competition will be held for the 14th time. Participants will be presented with a series of multiple-choice questions. The correct answers will be provided during the workshops. By paying close attention, these can be entered on the questionnaire. The Piet van der Zouwen Prize is named after the former regional manager and honorary member of HZC and one of the initiators of the MSD. The winner of this competition will receive a scale model from Piet van der Zouwen himself and will have an interview and photo published in De Machinist and on the websites of Bouwend Nederland and SOMA Bedrijfsopleidingen, respectively.
