At the Heidepol nature cemetery near Arnhem, instructor Sytze Kloosterman guided three participants during the 5-day training course on Safe Operation of the Grave Digging Machine. In an environment where respect for nature and the surroundings is paramount, the participants learned how to operate a grave digging machine safely, carefully, and without causing damage.
The training focuses on the safe and responsible operation of the Boki grave digging machine, specifically for cemetery employees. Over five days – with a strong focus on practical application – all facets of the trade were covered: from digging and backfilling graves to working with formwork and neatly finishing the entire job.
What made this week extra special was the execution at a realistic and challenging location. Work was carried out at various points in the cemetery, including a hard-to-reach grave situated between trees and existing graves. Situations like this demand maximum precision, technical insight, and a keen eye for safety. After all, damage to surrounding graves is simply not an option.
In addition to practical skills, attention was also paid to engine technology, hydraulics, machine maintenance, and applicable safety regulations. The small group size (maximum of three participants) ensured intensive guidance and plenty of individual attention. The training concluded with a practical assessment, after which participants receive a certificate upon satisfactory results.
This practice-oriented approach aligns seamlessly with the needs of municipalities and organizations responsible for the management of cemeteries. Well-trained machine operators make the difference in quality, safety, and respectful work in this unique environment.
