Crane Operator Deck Crane stage 3

A deck crane operator moves loads on and off a ship. The operator must work safely, responsibly, and efficiently, and must be able to communicate clearly with colleagues. The deck crane operator is knowledgeable about lifting plans, safety aspects of lifting equipment, and the attachment of loads. They are also responsible for the daily maintenance of the lifting equipment. All these aspects are covered during the Crane Operator Stage 3 course (pedestal deck crane maritime / craddle crane maritime).

What will you learn during the course?

The course combines theory and practice. You will learn about:

  • tap types and appearances
  • work safely and efficiently with the crane
  • lifting plans within lifting table
  • ballast system in combination with lifting table
  • estimate mass of loads
  • safety aspects of lifting equipment (working load, test load, breaking force and usage factor) and lifting equipment certificates
  • rejection criteria and visual inspection
  • safe connecting and guiding of loads
  • working with walkie-talkie, hand and arm signals
  • daily maintenance including basic knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical engineering

What do you get afterwards?

Step 1: This is the Basic Training. You complete the basic training with a theoretical and practical exam. If this assessment is positive, you will receive the Provisional Certificate of Expertise & Registration – Crane Operator Offshore Stage 2.

Step 2: Offshore practical experience. After completing the course, you must complete at least 40 hours of crane operation under the supervision of a certified crane operator. These hours must be recorded. You must also complete and pass the assignments in the practical assignment book.

Step 3: Exam. After this period, as a student, you can apply for an exam at SOMA Bedrijfsopleidingen. This exam will take place at the offshore location. During the exam, all practical skills will be tested, including loading and unloading a supply boat. If the student passes the exam, they will receive the Certificate of Expertise & Registration – Crane Operator Offshore Floating – Stage 3. This Certificate of Expertise & Registration is valid for a fixed period of four years.

Additional information

  • To be eligible for the Refresher training, the employee must complete at least 10 hours of crane operation per year. These hours must be signed by the supervisor.
