Operators of aerial work platforms and earthmoving equipment should be better informed about the risks of working at railway crossings. This is one of the recommendations of the Dutch Safety Board.
Early this year, the train driver was killed after a collision between a train and an aerial platform near Dalfsen. The Dutch Safety Board investigated the accident and concluded that ProRail and employers could do more, particularly in the areas of communication and information provision. The Dutch Safety Board also recommends that ProRail invest in an alarm system.
Aerial work platform could not consult
On the day of the accident, according to the Dutch Safety Board, the operator of the aerial platform had no opportunity to consult with ProRail about the work. Warning them at the very last moment was also impossible. Only four seconds before the collision did the train driver realize there was an aerial platform on the level crossing.
